The Relationships between Malocclusion and Periodontal Disease

Abstract
It is known that plaque, calculus, and traumatic occlusion are etiologic factors of periodontal disease. Among these, plaque is the primary etiologic factor of periodontal disease. This study is purposed to compare relationships between malocclusion and periodontal disease. We selected 424 Korean(Male 253, Female 171) over 20 years old among out-patients who visited dental department of Sung-Sim Hospital, Chung-Ang University from the 5th January to 31 th December 1983. These populations have no missing teeth on lower incisors and upper 1 st molars.
The results are as follows;
1) The mean plaque index score for the whole group is 1.5341.
2) The covariances of relationships of plaque index with occlusal feature index are crowding 0.448, cuspal interdigitaton-0.040, overbite-0. 073, and overjet 0. 0010. These indicate that crowding is significant and other features such as cuspal interdigitation, overbite, and overjet are not significant.
3) The correlation coefficients of relationships of plaque index with occlusal feature index are crowding 0.2196, cuspal interdigitation-0.038, overbite-0.0529, and overjet 0.0091. These mean that crowding is significant and other features such as cuspal interdigitation, overbite, and overjet are not significant.
